CLASS POLICIES

Welcome to the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Please read policies carefully before registering for classes and workshops. Enjoy your art experience! Thank you.

Please note: Fall and winter classes are 12 weeks and spring classes are 10 weeks unless otherwise indicated.

Registration Procedures:
Registration is accepted by mail, by fax, when using our website form, online at www.artcenternj.org or in person.

  • Use an official Visual Arts Center form found in the back of the brochure, (photocopied facsimiles will also be accepted), or in person. Handwritten notes will not be accepted. Forms can be mailed directly to the Registrar at: Visual Arts Center of NJ, 68 Elm Street, Summit, NJ 07901 or faxed to 908-273-1457.
  • Access our website and register directly online using a credit card.
  • In person anytime during regular Visual Arts Center hours after the brochure is posted online.

The Visual Arts Center does not conduct registration over the phone. Each class must be paid in full at the time of registration. Pro-rating is not available. Students registering for classes already in session will be issued a Letter of Credit for the missed class period. A $25 fee will be assessed for any returned checks.

The Visual Arts Center does not confirm registration. The Center makes calls to students only in the event of a class postponement or cancellation. Students should assume a class is running unless otherwise notified 2-3 days before the starting date. Classes (5 or 10 weeks) must reach minimum enrollment by the Saturday preceding the first class meeting. Workshops must reach minimum enrollment one week before the scheduled date.

Students under 18 years of age must have written permission from a parent or guardian to attend any class which uses a life model.

Refunds & Letters of Credit:
After the first week of classes no refunds will be given except in the case of a cancellation by the Visual Arts Center, or in the event that a class reaches maximum enrollment before your registration is received. Refunds can be expected 3-4 weeks from the date requested. Students who withdraw from classes after the first week of classes, but before the third week of the semester will be issued a Letter of Credit. This credit is based on the number of remaining classes minus a one-week penalty and $10 registration fee. The Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued.

After the second week of classes, no letters of credit will be issued. For workshops, students who withdraw one week before the scheduled start date of a workshop will be refunded the full amount of their payment minus a $10 registration fee. After that, no refunds will be issued.

Auditing & Transfers:
The Visual Arts Center does not permit students to audit classes or workshops. Students may transfer to any class not already filled within the first two weeks of class.

Make-Ups Classes:
The Visual Arts Center will only be closed for the dates listed in the Calendar of Events. Classes not held due to holidays or instructor absence will be made up. Students missing classes by their own decision will not receive a refund, letter of credit or make-up.

Substitutions:
The Visual Arts Center reserves the right to substitute instructors of an equal caliber for any class or workshop. The Visual Arts Center also reserves the right to substitute life & portrait models for any reason.

Weather:
Please call the Visual Arts Center at 908-273-9121 to listen for closing announcements due to inclement weather. The announcements will be recorded by 7:30 am of the morning in question and be on the radio at 101.5 FM. Also, check for updates online at www.artcenternj.org.

Student Property:
The Visual Arts Center is not responsible for artwork and other property left on the premises and has no liability if such property is lost, stolen or damaged, except in instances when artwork is displayed in a gallery exhibition and insurance coverage is in place. The Visual Arts Center does not have the space to store artwork between semesters. Any artwork left after the semester ends will be discarded. The Visual Arts Center is not responsible for any digital artwork or images left on the computers in the digital lab. You must back up your work on your own flash drive or CD every time you use the lab.

Photographs:
The Visual Arts Center will occasionally document classes and student work using photography and video for promotional purposes only. If you do not wish yourself or your child photographed, please notify the Center in writing.

Gift Certificates:
Gift Certificates are available for purchase in the office. They are not redeemable for cash.

Student Behavior:
The Visual Arts Center reserves the right to dismiss any student for inappropriate behavior. Students under 18 years of age must have written permission from a parent or guardian to attend any class which uses a life model.
